in adult Mental Health services
who self-injure as a survival strategy
Come and join us on the 12th September 2006 at "The Learning Centre", St George's Hospital, South Staffordshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to consider and debate the issues:
Does the prevalent 'prevention' model work?
Is a 'harm-reduction' approach a better option?
What do service users say they want and need?
How do we define the group who self-injure safely?
What are professional 'code of conduct' implications?
The Conference is for all those with an interest in/responsibility for the management of self-injury:
Senior managers
Practitioners
Service users
Royal Colleges
Legal profession
The Conference Programme will be chaired by Joe Nichols, Professional Advisor, Nursing and Midwifery Council, starting off with listening to the experiences of women service users followed by short presentations on how harm-reduction or harm-minimisation works in practice. with the rest of the day devoted to workshops to discuss the pros and cons of this approach: defining the client group - risk assessment - care planning - care pathways - support and therapeutic approaches - staff support / supervision underpinned by 'code of conduct' implications.
